Phil Brown delighted after Monday night's win against Oxford United
Phil Brown was proud of his players after they got back to winning ways in front of the Sky cameras at Roots Hall on Monday night.
Brown’s boys blew Oxford United away with goals from Lee Barnard, Will Aktinson and the impressive Jamar Loza.
It ended a tough run of games without a win for Blues, and while Brown was relieved to end that run, he was proud of his players’ performance.
He said: “I’m more proud than I am relieved because the performance of the players was absolutely fantastic from start to finish.
“Oxford are a very good side and caused us problems, but I thought we defended well and attacked well.
“We’ve been keeping clean sheets but just lacking that quality in the final third, and tonight we certainly had that.
“The first goal was absolutely crucial and once we got that you could see the confidence lift in the players.
“We worked extremely hard and put Oxford under pressure, and tonight we got the rewards.
“We could’ve got more goals, but their goalkeeper, despite conceding three, had a terrific game.”
Brown was pleased to see Lee Barnard get his first goal since returning to the club.
He added: “You sensed the shackles were off for Lee once he’d got that goal. It seemed the weight was lifted from his shoulders.
“He’s worked very hard since he came here, we’ve had lots of chats, and he’s deserved that goal.”
Blues’ boss is now keen for Blues to kick-on after bringing the winless run to an end. He said; “It’s great that we’ve got this win because it has given everyone a much needed lift.
“We had only lost four games on that run, and there’s something right about what we’re doing. 16 clean sheets means we should be much higher up.
“Tonight we got the other end of the pitch right and we’ve got to keep that going now.”
