Myles Weston joins Southend United to become our first signing of the summer

Southend United are delighted to announce the signing of Myles Weston, who becomes the club’s first arrival of the summer, signing a two-year deal.

26-year-old Weston joins the club following his release by League 1 side Gillingham at the end of the 2013-14 campaign, in which he helped them to a 17th placed finish.

In Weston’s first season with the Gills, he helped them win promotion to League 1, under the stewardship of Martin Allen.

The left-winger, who can also play as a striker, joined Gillingham from Brentford in 2012, with whom he had spent three years previously.

His career kicked off at Notts County, having come through the youth system at Charlton Athletic, before his form with County earned him a move to the Bees.

Weston made 43 appearances for Gillingham last season, but was allowed to leave by former Blues boss Peter Taylor.

Blues boss Phil Brown said: “I’m delighted to have Myles joining us here at Southend United. His pace and trickery will cause defences in this division all sorts of problems.

“He knows what it takes to win promotion from League 2, having done so with Gillingham a couple of years ago. He’s got that experience and should have a big part to play for us next season.”

Myles said: “I’m really pleased to have finalised the move to Southend United, and I can’t wait to get start in pre-season.

“I met with the manager and was really enthused by his plans for the football club. I immediately wanted to be a part of that, and I’m looking forward to the future.”
