League 2 Preview 2014-15: Dagenham & Redbridge

18 June 2014

We take a look at local rivals, Dagenham & Redbridge

LAST SEASON

At the start of the 2013-14 campaign, many were tipping Dagenham & Redbridge to be one of those fighting against relegation for much of the season. In truth, that was never really the case as Wayne Burnett’s side played with a youth exuberance that saw them finish the season in ninth, playing good, exciting football throughout the campaign. Burnett will be well aware of the need to strengthen to look to repeat last season’s feat.

THE MANAGER

Wayne Burnett took charge in February 2013, following John Still’s decision to move to Luton Town. Burnett was then appointed as permanent manager during the off season, and enjoyed an excellent first season in charge of the club. As a player, he enjoyed spells with Huddersfield Town, Grimsby Town and Plymouth Argyle.

THE MEN TO WATCH

Captain Abu Ogogo has impressed in recent years, having joined the club in 2009 after his release from Arsenal. The midfielder won their Player of the Year awards, and scored nine goals last season.

Striker Rhys Murphy, another Arsenal academy graduate, made a flying start to the season, and got 13 league goals in total last season. Injury curtailed his campaign, and he is currently working his way back to fitness.

Former Colchester United winger Medy Elito has pace to trouble defenders in League 2. He signed a new contract in January 2013, and has been with the club since 2011.

WHAT’S HAPPENED SO FAR

Chris Lewington, Jordan Seabright and Femi Ilesnami left the club, while Alex Osborn has also gone.
Bradley Goldberg has signed a new deal, but Zavon Hines is still deciding his future, along with Gavin Hoyte.
Matt Saunders is another to have departed, but goalkeeper Liam O’Brien has arrived from Brentford.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Blues and Dagenham & Redbridge have met 11 times in total, with Blues coming out on top in six of those meetings.

The Daggers have won three times, two of which were last season, and there have been two draws – one of which was last season.

NEXT SEASON

Southend United will face Dagenham & Redbridge at Roots Hall on Sunday 28th December. The game at the home of the Daggers will be on Saturday 14th March.
