League 2 Preview 2014-15: Burton Albion

25 June 2014

We take a look at the Brewers...

After missing out on a trip to Wembley in the League 2 Play-offs during 2012-13, having been beaten in the semi-finals, Gary Rowett’s side impressed once again and went one better – before eventually falling short in the Play-off final against Fleetwood. After sitting in the play-off places for much of the season, a poor run of form towards the end of the season meant they finished sixth. The Brewers proved too strong for Blues in the semi-finals, winning 3-2 on aggregate, but went down 1-0 to the Cod Army at Wembley.

Gary Rowett took charge following the departure of Paul Peschisolido after a poor run of form in 2012. He oversaw their improvement towards of the end of the 2011-12 campaign, and in his first full season in charge guided them to a play-off place. The same followed in 2012-13, and Rowett will now be hoping to go one better next season with promotion. As a player, he spent time with Derby County, Birmingham City and Leicester City.

John Mousinho is one of Burton’s summer signings, having joined following his release from Preston North End. The midfielder had spells at Stevenage and Gillingham last season.

Adam McGurk was the man to down Blues in the play-offs, scoring in both legs. The striker, who joined Burton in 2013, has spent time with Hednesford Town and Tranmere Rovers. He almost gave up football following an injury.

Skipper Ian Sharps missed the final, and has never had much joy in the play-offs, but the defender is excellent at this level. The Brewers’ captain joined from Rotherham United in 2013, initially on loan.

Midfielder Robbie Weir has recently signed a new two-year deal, while Shane Cansdell-Sherriff who was on loan last season, has signed permanently.

John Mousinho has signed for the club, along with Lucas Akins who has come in from Stevenage.

Chris Hussey has left while George Taft, a central defender, has joined the club.

Lee Bell, Joe Doyle, Phil Edwards, Liam Slade, Dominic Knowles, Dean Lyness and Marcus Harness have all signed new deals.

Of the ten meetings in total, four of those came last season. Before 2013-14, Blues had won one, drawn one and lost four.

Last season, Phil Brown’s side won both games in the regular season, but lost 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium in the first-leg of the play-offs, before drawing 2-2 in the reverse fixture at Roots Hall.
