Fixture Release: Five games that could shape our season

18 June 2014

Five games that could define Southend United's season...

We take a look at five games that could determine our 2014-15 campaign…

Accrington Stanley vs. Southend United – Saturday 9th August

The first game of the campaign is always important as you look to get off the perfect start. It’ll be a long, and tough, trip for Blues as they make the journey to the Crown Ground to take on James Beattie’s Accrington Stanley.

Last season, Blues drew 1-1 with Stanley away from home, and towards the end of the season, beat them 1-0 at Roots Hall. Beattie’s side had a shocking start to their 2013-14 season, and will be looking to kick-off with a much better start this time around.

Southend United vs. Stevenage – Saturday 16th August

It’s always good to get off to a good start at home in the league, and Blues will be looking to do just that when recently relegated Stevenage visit on the second weekend of the season.

Blues had an impressive home record last season, having struggled in the past, and they will be looking to kick off with a bang.

Three days later AFC Wimbledon visit, so Blues will want to make sure they’re ready for that one with three points against Graham Westley’s side.

Southend United vs. Burton Albion – Saturday 20th December

Revenge will be in the minds of everyone connected with Southend United when we meet our play-off conquerors Burton Albion in the final game before Christmas.

The Brewers ended Blues’ hopes of promotion last season, and will be expected to challenge again after two failed play-off attempts for Gary Rowett’s side.

With it being the final game before Christmas, Blues will be looking to head into the festive period in good spirits.

Portsmouth vs. Southend United – Saturday 24th January

It was one of the most memorable games of last season as Blues came from behind to win at Fratton Park. That was on a Tuesday night, so fans will be excited by the prospect of a visit on a Saturday.

Portsmouth have strengthened over the summer, and will be looking to get back into League 1 after a tough season last time around.

Blues will be hoping for a similar result this time around, and it would be the ideal way to prepare for the final few months of the season.

Southend United vs. Luton Town – Saturday 25th April

Our final home game of the season will be against newly-promoted Luton Town, who are one of the bookies’ favourites for promotion this time around.

Luton won the Conference at a canter last year and have made some impressive signings over the summer months already. Blues will be looking to end their games at Roots Hall with a win, just like last season.

It could well be an important game for both sides, if their season goes to plan, and there’ll be a big crowd at Roots Hall for the game.

Let’s hope it’s all sewn up by the time we travel to Morecambe on the final day of the season!
