Coker: I'm looking forward to facing my local team

Ben Coker on why he is looking forward to facing Cambridge United

Southend United left-back Ben Coker is looking forward to facing Cambridge United next season – because it’s the most local one to his home!

Coker actually spent a few years in Cambridge’s academy aged 12-15, but never got the chance to continue and play at the Abbey Stadium.

The left-back was up early this morning to see the fixtures released, and says the announcement has given him a real buzz ahead of the new campaign.

Coker said: “I was excited to see the fixture announcement this morning and the first game I looked for was Cambridge United away.

“I actually live quite close to the Abbey and played for the club in their academy for three years when I was younger.

“Obviously I never got the chance to play at the stadium having moved on, so it’ll be nice to play there for the first time with it being so close to my home.

“The fixtures always give you a bit of a buzz knowing the season is getting closer and closer. I’m really looking forward to getting back in to training.”

Coker celebrated his 25th birthday on Tuesday, and is hoping to be celebrating some early wins as Blues face a tough opening month of the season.

He added: “It’s a tough opening month with a lot of travelling but it will be good to get it out of the way, and hopefully out of the way with the points in the bag.

“Carlisle, Plymouth and Accrington are three long trips, and tough games, but if we can get a good pre-season under our belts, we’ll be confident.

“I’m excited to get started, and I’m sure we’ll all be raring to go for that first fixture after a few weeks of pre-season.”
