Striker says he can't wait to get started....
Southend United striker Lee Barnard is itching to get started again following the summer break as pre-season draws ever closer for Blues’ squad.
News earlier this week confirmed Barnard would be with Blues for the 2014-15 campaign, and he’s desperate to get going.
The striker was disappointed with how things went during his first six months at the club but believes pre-season is a fresh start for him.
He said: “It was nice to have some time off, but if I’m honest I really can’t wait to get started again. I didn’t play much during last season, so I’ve kept working hard throughout the summer.
“It’s a fresh start for me in many ways because I’ll be able to get a full pre-season under my belt in preparation for the new season which I didn’t have last time around.
“I’m really pleased to be back the club and playing under Phil Brown. I was thankful to him and the chairman for bringing me back to Roots Hall.
“Hopefully I can get a good pre-season under my belt and then when the season starts, repay their faith by getting goals to help the club do well.”
Barnard believes pre-season training and games will allow him to rediscover the form he showed during his first spell with the club.
He added: “I’ve been working hard in the last couple of weeks because I want to be in the best shape possible for the first day of training.
“It was frustrating at time last season but I’m confident I can get back to my best with a good pre-season under my belt.
“The pre-season games are all about getting the minutes in and finding your touch. I look forward to them because I know how important they are.
“The schedule this time around is good as we build up nicely to the start of the campaign with games against Ipswich Town and QPR that will really test us.
“I had a quick look at the fixtures when they were released. It’s a tough first month of the season but I believe if we get a good pre-season in, we will all be ready for it.”
