Blues pick up their second win of pre-season...
Southend United picked up their second win of pre-season as they beat Billericay Town 3-1 at New Lodge on Tuesday night.
Phil Brown’s side produced an impressive opening 45 minutes that saw Kevan Hurst give Blues the lead with a well taken goal, before summer signing got two for himself to make it 3-0.
Billericay pulled one back just before half-time to make it 3-1 at the break. The second-half was much more subdued but it was another worthwhile exercise for the squad.
Blues had taken the lead early against Great Wakering on Saturday, and they thought they had done the same at New Lodge.
Hurst’s free-kick was met by the head of Barry Corr who finished well, but the effort was ruled out for offside against the striker.
After a couple of scares at the other end, Blues took the lead, and it was Hurst who found the opener.
The midfielder took Ryan Auger’s ball over the top in his stride and lifted the ball beautifully over the onrushing goalkeeper into the net.
Weston then made it 2-0 with his second in as many games as he flicked Hurst’s free-kick on at the near post and found the far corner.
The striker then got his second of the game after good work from Roman Michael-Percil saw him roll the ball across goal for Weston to tap home.
The hosts pulled a goal back moments later as Chris Webber produced an excellent finish from 25-yards that found the bottom corner.
Blues made ten changes within the first 15 minutes of the second-half, as Billericay enjoyed a decent spell during the opening exchanges.
Jack Payne had a good chance to make it four after a crossfield pass from Craig Fagan, but his effort was well kept out. From the resulting corner, Fagan headed narrowly wide at the near post.
Will Atkinson then hit the post as Blues got closer to adding a fourth, but that was to be as close as they got as the game ended 3-1.
