Match Preview: Southend United vs. Queens Park Rangers

30 July 2014

Southend United welcome Premier League side Queens Park Rangers to Roots Hall tonight in their final pre-season friendly.

Blues will play their second home friendly in 24 hours when they welcome Harry Redknapp’s side to Roots Hall on Wednesday evening.

Last night, Blues faced Championship side Ipswich Town and were beaten by a 90th minute goal from Anthony Wordsworth, as Mick McCarthy’s side won 2-1.

Myles Weston got Blues’ goal with his first touch after coming off the bench. The summer signing is expected to start tonight’s game.

Barry Corr, Will Atkinson, Conor Clifford and goalkeeper Daniel Bentley, all of whom didn’t feature against the Tractor Boys, are likely to get 90 minutes of football under their belts.

It will also be QPR’s second game in two nights, having faced League 1 side Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium.

Redknapp’s side drew 2-2 on Tuesday night, with the likes of Joey Barton and Charlie Austin getting 90 minutes under their belts.

First-team members Ale Faurlin, Matt Phillips and Nedum Onuoha are likely to feature, while Steven Caulker and Junior Hoilett may play having not completed 90 minutes at Orient.

Last pre-season, Blues were beaten 3-1 by the R’s at Roots Hall. Mark Phillips got the goal for Phil Brown’s side.

Andrew Johnson, Stephane Mbia and Onuoha got the goals for the then Championship club.
