Brown: Good to see Leonard and Thompson back in action

Blue's boss happy to see the duo back involved...

Phil Brown was happy to see Ryan Leonard and Adam Thompson come through an hour of action as Blues beat Colchester United 2-1 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday.

The duo both missed the game against Braintree Town on Saturday but were back involved in the game against Joe Dunne’s side at Boots & Laces.

Brown said: “Adam was a bit unlucky last season in that his progression was curtailed by injury after earning his 18-month contract with us.

“He’s had a back problem in pre-season which has meant he’s missed a couple of games so it was good to see him back involved against Colchester.

“Adam put in a good display alongside Luke Prosser and has certainly gone some way to staking his claim for that first match on August 9th.

“Lenny got about the pitch in the first-half and made an impression on the game, but around the hour mark we could see he was tiring slightly so made the change.”

Blues’ boss was once again pleased with the performance, against a strong Colchester United side.

He added: “They played a strong team for the majority of the game, even the players that came on included the likes of Sean Clohessy who we all know well from his time at Southend United.

“We moved the ball around well, got a good goal in the second-half, and maybe could have had a few more. It was another step up, which was important for the players.”

Brown was also pleased to see Lee Barnard find the back of the net for the first time in pre-season, adding: “Barney has worked extremely hard so far since we came back in. He looks a lot fitter and sharper and is getting back to being the Lee Barnard all the Southend United supporters know. It was good for him personally to get the goal.

“I actually asked the referee what the penalty was given for because none of us were sure. He said he had warned the defender three times about holding, and he did it again so awarded the spot kick.”
