Blues' boss praises efforts of first week...
Southend United manager Phil Brown has been pleased with the efforts of his squad during the first week of pre-season training.
Blues’ players reported back on Tuesday, and in the blistering heat have looked sharp according to their manager as the intensity steps up.
Brown feels they are in the best shape they can be at this stage for the trip to Malaga on Sunday to continue their preparations.
He said: “It’s been a very good week. As the manager, I’ve got to try and make sure the players don’t peak too soon and exert all their energy too early.
“That’s not just for pre-season, that is for over the course of the campaign. But I’ve been very pleased with their efforts so far.
“They were a very fit group of players last season. They’ve had about six weeks off and returned in pretty much the same condition, which is testament to them.
“The footballs came out on the second day and they all got their touch in very early, helped by the fact they are a very fit group of players.
“They’re in good shape for Spain. It has been a tough first week with the heat here, but it’s going to be even hotter over there!”
Brown says the structure for the week has been looked at in great detail, with sessions planned at certain times throughout the day.
He added: “We played a game at 10:30am in Spain last season and the conditions were almost unbearable, so we’ve learnt from that experience.
“We’ll be doing triple sessions out there, with the first one very early in the morning, a gym or swim session in the afternoon and then a late night session.
“The strength and conditioning team have looked at all our options while we’re out there, and feel this is the perfect way to increase and improve the fitness levels to have them ready for the game against Great Wakering Rovers.”
