Phil Brown on Southend United's first day of pre-season...
Southend United enjoyed a successful first day in Spain according to manager Phil Brown.
Blues’ management staff and players jetted off to Malaga on Sunday morning for a training camp in the Spanish heat.
Brown said: “It was a bright and early start but we’re looking forward to what is to come during the trip to Spain. We’ve already enjoyed a good first session out here.
“It was a very early start but after an afternoon rest we had an excellent session at around 6pm, and it was still around 28 degrees.
“We’ve taken a very settled squad out with us on this trip, and I believe that’s not just by chance, that’s down to hard work.
“We lost four or five players from last season who played a role, with the likes of Freddy Eastwood and Anthony Straker moving on.
“But we’ve tied Dan Bentley, Ben Coker, Ryan Leonard and Kevan Hurst down to contracts, and much of the squad is still with us.
“I think that’s a great thing to have during this training camp and the rest of the season.
“There’ll be lots of hard work for the players, but it is also a great chance for the team to bond even more.”
Blues’ players will enjoy triple sessions out in Spain, with gym/swim work either side of morning and afternoon sessions out on the pitches.
Brown says the hard work should get the players in ideal shape for that first game of pre-season against Great Wakering Rovers.
“Great Wakering is always the curtain raiser so to speak for our campaign,” Brown added. “We’re all looking forward to that game.
“We’ve taken a settled squad to Spain but the trialists are welcome to train with Ricky Duncan while we’re away.
“It’s up to them what they do, but it’s not fair for us to judge them just on fitness work. They’ll come back in once we’re back.
“A few of them could feature in the second-half against Great Wakering.”
