Breaking News: David Worrall joins Southend United

23 July 2014

David Worrall joins Southend United on a two-year deal...

Southend United Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of 24-year-old David Worrall on a two-year contract.

Winger Worrall had his contract with Championship side Rotherham United cancelled by mutual consent last week, and Blues fought off competition from a number of other clubs to secure his signature.

Worrall began his career with Bury, before moving to West Bromwich Albion in 2007. He had loan spells back at Bury and with Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury Town during his time with the Baggies.

In 2010, after a successful loan spell he returned to Bury permanently and went on to make 143 league appearances during three years at Gigg Lane.

His form earned him a move to Rotherham United in the summer of 2013, but things didn’t work out at the New York Stadium, and after a loan spell with Oldham Athletic last season had his contract cancelled my mutual consent.

Your first chance to see Worrall in action will be against Ipswich Town and QPR in our two home pre-season friendlies next week.

Blues’ boss Phil Brown said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that we have completed the signing of such a highly-rated winger in David Worrall – he’ll bring a huge amount to this football club.

“We identified him early on this pre-season as a target and someone we thought would really help our promotion push next season, but we knew there was lots of interest.

“To have beat off other clubs to get this deal over the line is fantastic news, and shows that Southend United is an attractive proposition for players.”

We will have an exclusive interview with David Worrall available later today.
