Plymouth Argyle: The Last Meeting

9 January 2014

A look at Southend United's last game against Plymouth Argyle

Southend United head to Plymouth on Saturday hoping to record a double over the Pilgrims, following their win at Roots Hall earlier in the season.

Blues beat John Sheridan’s side 1-0 on the opening day of the season thanks to a goal from striker Barry Corr.

Corr opened the scoring in the 15th minute as he finished off a superb team move that saw Marc Laird tee him up.

Paul Wotton had a good chance on the stroke of half-time to level, but attempted a chip with a free-kick from the edge of the box, and Dan Bentley held it comfortably.

Luke McCormick made a great save to deny Marc Laird in the 70th minute, while Anthony Straker was inches away from doubling Blues’ advantage.

The one goal was to be enough though as Blues made a winning start to 2013. It was also Phil Brown’s first home win in charge of the club.

John White, Ben Coker, Will Atkinson, Conor Clifford and Craig Reid all made their debuts in the game.

Southend United: Bentley, White, Phillips, Prosser, Coker, Atkinson, Leonard, Laird, Straker, Eastwood (Reid 68), Corr (Clifford 86) (Subs) Smith, Timlin, Reid, Clifford, Bennett, Njie, Payne

Plymouth Argyle: McCormick, Berry, Hourihane, Alessandra, Boco, Reid (Harvey 71), Morgan, Blizzard (Young 76), Wotton (Richards 45), Nelson, Blackman (Subs) Cole, Harvey, Richards, Vassell, Purrington, Young, Lane.
