Dave Penney on who plays at right-back for Southend United against Chesterfield this weekend
Assistant boss Dave Penney says Blues have a decision to make as to who plays right-back against Chesterfield on Saturday.
With John White out injured, Ryan Leonard filled in at right-back last weekend, with Adam Thompson among the substitutes.
Penney explained the reasoning behind Leonard taking White’s place, but admitted Blues lost something in midfield they made need against Chesterfield.
Blues’ assistant said: “The manager has a decision to make because we slightly missed Lenny in midfield last weekend at Plymouth.
“He really drives the team forward and has added goals so he’s an important player in the middle of the park.
“The thinking last weekend was that Plymouth’s winger Jason Banton was quick and Ryan more than matched him throughout.
“In fact, there was so much hype about him but he had came off because Ryan had kept him quiet.
“But we’ve got Adam Thompson who can play there and I also think Will Atkinson would do a job because of the qualities he has.
“So we’ll work on a few things in training on Thursday and Friday and make a decision about who we go with.”
Penney also added that Blues were looking to see if a right-back was available to come in.
“We are looking and the manager has put a few calls in but I’m not sure what’s going to happen,” he said.
“We have got options there for the weekend but with John out it’s something we’re looking into.
“His injury was three weeks from when he sustained it against Millwall so he’s still a little way off.”
