Ryan Leonard on the two goals and the three points to start 2014 against Portsmouth
Ryan Leonard is hoping 2014 can continue in the same manner that it started after he bagged a brace to seal the win against Portsmouth.
Leonard grabbed his first to draw Blues level before scoring a dramatic late winner that he described as ‘one of his best senior goals’.
The midfielder is now hoping to continue his red hot form for the rest of the season.
He said: “It was a great win and the celebrations at the end were brilliant, I didn’t really know what to do when I scored.
“It’s a great start to the year for me and the team and we just about deserved it in my opinion on the balance of the game.
“We had to deal with the wind in the first-half and I thought we did it okay until they scored the goal, but it was tough.
“You could see that in the second-half that we were getting some joy from balls into the box.
“It did seem like it might be heading for a draw but as soon as I hit the ball I knew it was going in, which is a great feeling.
“It’s one of the best goals I’ve scored in my senior career, I couldn’t have hit it better I don’t think.”
Leonard admitted he hasn’t been at his best since his return from injury, but believes he’s now back to where he was before he missed three weeks of action.
He added: “Obviously when you get injured it is a bit tough but once you’ve had a few games you start to regain your fitness.
“I probably hadn’t got back to the levels I was at before the injury until Pompey so I’m really pleased.
“We played quite a few different formations today but it worked well and we were able to adapt.
“I’m absolutely delighted to have got the winning goal and hopefully they keep coming for the rest of the season.”
