Phil Brown delighted as Southend United win 2-1 against Portsmouth at Roots Hall
‘That’s what football is all about’ was the message from Blues boss Phil Brown after Ryan Leonard scored a 93rd minute winner against Pompey.
Leonard’s double handed Blues all three points, as Brown’s side had to come from behind again against Richie Barker’s men.
Brown admitted Blues were ready to settle for the point, but was delighted with the winner.
He said; “That’s what it’s all about, there’s nothing sweeter than winning it so late and giving the other team no chance to respond.
“The players have had to dig really deep here today but we’ve said it all season that they are full of spirit and belief.
“We were up against it in the first-half because of the wind and they’ve put some dangerous balls into the box.
“They’ve gone ahead from a set-piece that we’ve struggled to deal with but then we’ve made a change and responded.
“In the second-half we push on and in the end I think we deserved to win the game.
“It was an excellent finish to win it, we know Ryan Leonard has got that in his locker, he’s full of confidence at the moment.
“The celebrations were great. I said to the lads I’d slide on my knees if we won the game at half-time, but thankfully they didn’t hold me to that.”
Brown admitted the tactical change just before half-time had paid off for Blues, but said it could have been any one of his midfielders.
He added: “Anthony (Straker) was the one to be sacrificed and he was understandably disappointed, but it could have been any one of the midfielders.
“I felt we needed some added height because they were a big side today and it paid off.
“Barry came on and his presence on the pitch was important. He also got two assists and really showed everyone what he is all about today.”
