Brown: People will take note of that win

Phil Brown on Southend United's brilliant win against Chesterfield at Roots Hall

Phil Brown believes his Southend United side have sent out a message to the rest of League 2 after beating Chesterfield 3-0.

Ryan Leonard, Kevan Hurst and Barry Corr all scored as Blues dispatched of their promotion rivals at Roots Hall.

And their manager believes, for 70 minutes, it was the best league display of the season.

He said: “I’m actually looking forward to watching the DVD back of this game because we were magnificent.

“I am usually looking for one or two things that didn’t go so well, but I’m just going to enjoy watching this tonight.

“For 70 minutes we were fantastic and every single player was performing at the top of their game.

“But in the last 20 minutes we dropped off slightly and allowed Chesterfield to get some momentum.

“Unfortunately for them, we had a goalkeeper in top form who was not going to be beaten.

“People will look at this result and take note. They might think a man was sent off or we got the luck, but that isn’t the case.

“It was 11 v 11 and we were the better team against a very good Chesterfield side who I think will still win promotion.”

Brown was delighted with all three of Blues’ goals for very different reasons.

“The first was fantastic in any division. It was a wonderful pass from Luke O’Neill, great work from Straker and Hurst was on hand to finish.

“The second, Ryan Leonard just motored clear of everyone. When he opens up and gets into full flow, he’s difficult to keep up with.

“And Barry Corr has got another goal to his name with a very confident finish. I couldn’t have asked for more this afternoon.”
