Phil Brown on naming Ryan Leonard captain and his performance at right-back
Phil Brown was pleased with stand in captain Ryan Leonard’s performance as a makeshift right-back against Plymouth Argyle.
Leonard was given the captain’s armband on his return to his former club and also played at right-back in the absence of John White.
Blues’ boss admits it was a difficult decision to make, taking into account how well Leonard has done in the holding role this season.
Brown said: “It was a tough decision because Lenny has been doing an excellent job in the middle of the park.
“But I felt he was the right man for the job at right-back and he had a very good game with the armband on too.
“His performances merited the captaincy. He’s young but he’s done very well this season and is a captain in the making in my opinion.
“I think the last thing in my mind when choosing him was the fact he was coming back to his boyhood club.”
But Brown felt Blues missed his presence in the middle of the park against the Pilgrims.
He added: “We did miss him in the middle but it gave Tims, Will and Conor the chance to impress in there.
“Lenny did very well at right-back but he’s done very well in the middle of the park.
“He gets the ball and plays it simple, drives us forward and has added goals to our game.
“In the end I think it was the right decision to play him there because he did very well.”
