Phil Brown on why he handed Mark Phillips his 100th appearance for Blues in place of Adam Thompson
Phil Brown says Mark Phillips’ experience was one of the reasons behind his recall to the side against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
Phillips came in for Adam Thompson following the win against Millwall the previous weekend, despite Brown saying the 21-year-old put in his best performance in a Blues shirt.
And Phillips went on to make his 100th appearance for the club at Home Park and help the team pick up an important point on the road.
Brown said: “The challenge to some of the players, including Mark, is to earn a new contract come the end of the season.
“I want longevity at the football club and I want people who we to be here with us, and Mark certainly showed that against Plymouth.
“If truth be known, I gave Adam the chance to earn a contract against Millwall and he did that.
“But experience was going to be key against Plymouth because of the difficulties that Home Park brings.
“They were a side in form, a good team and there’s always a fairly hostile atmosphere here.
“Mark had also played a key role in helping us pick up seven points from nine over the Christmas period.
“His experience played a part in us getting a point. He put in an excellent display at Plymouth.”
