Manager Phil Brown on being able to bring Lee Barnard back to Southend United
Phil Brown says the Southend United squad have already expressed their delight at seeing Lee Barnard arrive on loan until the end of the season.
Barnard was at the training ground on Friday morning to complete his medical and meet the rest of the first-team squad.
And Brown says the reaction of his players was positive after seeing the Southampton striker join the club.
He said: “Lee was over with us this morning completing a medical and every player has said what a great signing it will be.
“It has put a marker down to the rest of the division and we need to get him up to match sharpness as quickly as possible.
“I’m absolutely delighted we’ve been able to sign someone on loan from a Premier League club.
“He will fit well into the system, the team and the area and hopefully get back to scoring goals for Southend again.
“I know he was a success here before and I’m sure he will rekindle that, it’s the kind of goalscorer we need.”
Brown also was thankful to the chairman for allowing him to bring Barnard to the club, adding: “I have to take my hat off to the chairman for this one.
“He’s allowed me to bring Lee to the club and I’m sure he’ll be a big hit here with Southend United.
“We hoped it would have happened earlier but because of an ankle injury Lee picked up, we’ve had to wait until now.
“I’ve now got a decision to make as to whether I bring him into the squad straight away for the game against Hull City.”
