Blues' boss looks to Bradford City's Capital One Cup run and promotion ahead of Saturday's tie with Hull City in the FA Cup
Phil Brown says his Southend United side can look to Bradford City ahead of their FA Cup tie with Hull City on Saturday.
Bradford stormed to the Capital One Cup final with wins against Premier League Arsenal, Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa last season.
Despite losing to Swansea City at Wembley, the momentum from the cup run helped pushed them on in the final stages of the season to seal promotion via the play-offs.
And Blues’ boss believes Bradford are a good example for his side to look at.
He said: “You only have to look at what Bradford City achieved last season to see a cup run can be a real positive.
“What they did was incredible and getting to Wembley was a fabulous achievement.
“They beat three Premier League sides on their route to the final, and that has given a lot of lower league teams lots of confidence.
“We’re going into this game with Hull full of belief, and I believe that if we play as we have been doing, there’s nothing stopping us copying Bradford and knocking out a Premier League side.”
Their cup run wasn’t the only thing that Brown was impressed by, as they beat Northampton Town back at Wembley to seal promotion.
“But it wasn’t just their cup run last season that was impressive. That cup run was the catalyst for a strong end to the season,” he said.
“Their form after Wembley was excellent and in the end their form got them into the play-off places.
“They then beat Northampton in the final and have carried that momentum into League 1 with them.
‘We know the main aim this season is promotion and I’m confident this cup run will be a positive and keep our momentum going.”
