Atkinson: Cup run gives us momentum

8 January 2014

Having experienced a great cup run last season, Will Atkinson is hoping it can have the same impact this time around with Southend United

Will Atkinson believes the momentum and confidence taken from Saturday’s win against Millwall will be a big plus when Blues head to Plymouth Argyle in League 2 this weekend.

Atkinson was instrumental in Bradford City’s terrific Capital One Cup run last season, and he’s hoping for more of the same in terms of the boost it gives in the league for Blues this season.

And the midfielder was keen to stress the importance of these two upcoming games, rather than mentioning the FA Cup tie against Hull City.

He said: “The next game is always your most important and so that means we’re all preparing for the game against Plymouth Argyle.

“We’re not thinking about Chesterfield yet, let alone Hull City in the FA Cup.

“I had a really good run with Bradford City last season and the main thing a cup run gives you is a break from the pressure of the league and momentum.

“That momentum can be so important and when you put in performances like the one we did against Millwall, it’s massive.

“It was a great game to be part of and I was delighted to get my first goal at Roots Hall. I had plenty of time to think about it but thankfully I got it right.”

Will travels to former club Plymouth Argyle this weekend, with the belief that if Blues play to their potential they can pick up an important three points.

He said: “We’re looking forward to getting back to league action and continuing to push up the table.

“I’m looking forward to going back, I had a really enjoyable six months on loan at Home Park.

“Hopefully I can be involved in the game, whether that is on the right like it was against Millwall on back in the centre as I’ve played for most of the season.

“Quite a lot of teams in this division have picked up some good wins, then lost of a few, and we’ll be hoping to inflict another defeat on Plymouth.

“They are a good side, and have done well at home, but if we go there and play as well as we know we can, I’m sure we’ll get the right result.”
