Dave Penney insists Blues are only looking forward
Assistant Manager Dave Penney insists Blues are only looking one way – and that’s up!
The gap between Blues and eighth place is now eight points, but Newport County have three games in hand.
Despite that, Phil Brown’s right-hand man insists Blues are looking at the teams above them, rather than the teams below them.
He said: “In the last few weeks it has been said that we’re trying to create a gap between ourselves and the teams outside the play-offs.
“That might be the case but we’re looking forward, not at the teams behind us at this stage of the season.
“We’re in a good position and pushing at the right end of the table, but we’re focused on catching the teams above us.
“At the end of the season, we want to have won automatic promotion, so we’re looking to catch the likes of Chesterfield.
“We’re not worried about the results of the teams below us, we’re just focused on ourselves and picking up as many points as possible.”
After a draw at home to Newport County and a disappointing defeat away to Mansfield Town last weekend, Blues will be looking to respond on Saturday against Exeter City.
And having gone on a number of excellent runs so far this season, Penney is confident Blues can do exactly the same again, starting against the Grecians.
He added: “We’ve had a couple of tough results in the last week or so, but we’re feeling refreshed after a good trip to Portugal.
“We got some really good time out on the grass and worked on a few things that should set us up nicely for the rest of the campaign.
“Exeter are a well organised side who have got the foundations there with Paul Tisdale having been there for such a long time.
“But we showed already against them this season the type of football we can play, and we’ll need more of the same against them on Saturday afternoon.
“There’s five games coming up in quick succession, and if we can rebuild that momentum and confidence on Saturday, that would be fantastic.”
