News: John Egan joins from Sunderland

27 February 2014

Defender John Egan has signed for Southend United from Sunderland on an emergency loan deal

Southend United Football Club is pleased to announce the arrival of John Egan on loan from Premier League side Sunderland.

The central defender has joined the club on a one-month emergency loan and will be available to play in Saturday’s game against Wycombe Wanderers.

Egan is yet to make an appearance for the Black Cats, but has had three loan spells so far in his short career.

During the 2011/12 season, the 21-year-old played two games for Crystal Palace, and then featured once for Sheffield United.

Last season he had a four game spell with Bradford City in League 2, where he played alongside Will Atkinson, Blues’ midfielder.

Egan has featured for the Republic of Ireland’s under-17’s, under-19’s and under-21’s, winning 17 caps combined across the three age groups.

Manager Phil Brown was pleased to have been able to bring in defensive cover, after seeing Blues’ injury list grow with Adam Thompson joining it following the York City game.

Brown said: “With Adam Thompson, Luke Prosser, Cian Bolger and Julian Bennett all out injured, we’ve moved as quickly as possible to bring in cover.

“John is the type of defender I like to have in my side, and I’m sure he’ll fit straight in.

“He’s a no-nonsense type of defender but at the same time he can get the ball down and play out from the back.

“The chairman has allowed us to move to bring someone in because of the injuries to current defenders.

“John will have a couple of days now to train with us and prepare for the Wycombe game on Saturday.”

An exclusive interview with John will be on the website this evening.
