Last Time Out: Exeter City

13 February 2014

A look back to the previous meeting between the two sides earlier this season

Southend United made it three straight wins as they climbed into the play-off places in League 2 again, following a 2-0 win away to Exeter City.

Cauley Woodrow opened the scoring in the 12th minute with his first goal in the Football League, before Kevan Hurst doubled Blues’ lead just before the half-hour mark.

Woodrow’s opener came courtesy of an excellent cross from skipper John White, as the striker started in place of the unwell Barry Corr.

The young striker managed to get in front of his defender and prod home, much to the delighted of the 255 Blues fans that made the journey.

Things got even better just before the 30-minute mark as Anthony Straker’s cross came all the way through to Hurst, who with the aid of a big deflection, volley home.

Woodrow almost grabbed a second goal, but saw his shot cleared off the line by Danny Coles, before Dan Bentley and Luke Prosser combined to keep out John O’Flynn.

Corr did feature against this former club, coming off the bench, and saw a shot well saved by Artur Krysiak, as Blues saw the game out comfortably.

Blues: Bentley; White, Kiernan, Prosser, Coker; Leonard, Atkinson, Timlin; Hurst (Laird 77), Woodrow (Corr 67), Straker (Phillips 88).

Subs not used: Smith, Njie, Reid, Payne.
