Southend United are pleased to confirm the signing of 26-year-old Gary Deegan on an initial three-month contract.The midfielder joins having impressed manager Phil Brown on trial, and in training over the last couple of weeks.
The Irishman began his career with Shelbourne, before spells with Kilkenny City, Longford Town, Galway United and Bohemians before moving to England with Coventry City.
Deegan made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice in his first season for the Sky Blues, but missed nearly all of the 2010-11 campaign with a serious injury.
He returned the following season to impress for Coventry in the Championship, making 25 appearances, scoring three goals.
The midfielder then moved to Scotland with Hibernian for the 2012-13 campaign, where he made 23 appearances, scoring once.
Last season he came back to England with Northampton Town. He made 30 appearances for the Cobblers but left the club this summer and has now linked up with Blues ahead of Saturday’s trip to Carlisle United.
Deegan is available for Saturday’s game at Carlisle United and will wear the number 22 shirt during his time with Southend United.
