A preview ahead of Southend United’s opening Sky Bet League 2 fixture of 2014-15 against Accrington Stanley on Saturday 9th August.
Blues travel to Accrington Stanley looking to open their 2014-15 campaign with all three points. Last season, Blues made their best start for 23 years with three straight wins, against Plymouth Argyle, Hartlepool United and Northampton Town.
Accrington on the other hand endured a torrid start under new manager James Beattie, failing to win any of their first 12 League 2 matches, before turning things around and finishing 15th in the division.
Referee: Andy Haines
Assistants: Barry Gordon and Marc Edwards
Fourth Official: Joe Hull
Referee Andy Haines took charge of Blues’ game at Accrington Stanley last season. That was his only Blues game of the campaign.
Haines handed out 91 yellow cards and 11 red cards during the 2013-14 campaign.
The Inside View
Phil Brown: “I think we have a better squad this time around, with the additions we have made. But it is all about proving that, starting at Accrington Stanley. We’re all looking forward to the season getting underway.”
Luke Joyce, Stanley’s skipper: “I’ve heard people say we would struggle because we haven’t signed anyone but we haven’t needed to. We’re out to prove people wrong again and hopefully that can start with a good result against Southend.”
