Interview: Weston says things are in place for a positive season

1 August 2014

Summer signing Myles Weston believes everything is now in place for a positive season for Southend United.

The striker has enjoyed an excellent first pre-season at Roots Hall, racking up four goals during Blues’ pre-season friendlies, including one against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

Weston feels Blues are now ready for that first game of the season, and is confident it will be a successful campaign under the guidance of manager Phil Brown.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed pre-season so far, the lads have made me feel very welcome and we’ve really put in some hard work since we came back.

“The tests we’ve ahead against different levels of opposition have been good, all building up to the first game of the season against Accrington Stanley.

“Most players got around 90 minutes under their belt in either the Ipswich Town or QPR game, so we’re all in good shape now ready for the first game.

“I don’t think any of us can wait to be honest. You put all the hard work in to be ready for that first game of the season and we’re all desperate to be in the starting line-up.

“I’ve been very impressed with everything that has gone on in pre-season and from what I’ve seen so far I’m confident we can have a successful season.

“The club went so close last season, but I feel the experience that was picked up in that will be important, while the manager is always looking at ways to improve the squad.”

Weston says he’s keen to just enjoy his football, and believes that will give him the edge throughout the season.

He added: “When you are enjoying your football, you play better in my opinion, and I’ve certainly enjoyed my football since coming to Southend United.

“We’ve got a good group of players here and I’m sure that togetherness will help us have a good season.”

The striker is also pleased to have got four goals to his name so far this pre-season, adding: “It’s been nice to get on the scoresheet and I’m pleased to have got the chance to play centrally.

“I’m happy to play wherever. I feel I’ve got a lot to offer the team this season in terms of goals and assists, hopefully I can get off to a good start at Accrington.”
