Interview: Deegan looking to impress to extend his stay

27 August 2014

Southend United’s latest signing Gary Deegan is hoping to impress enough during his three-month stay to extend his contract with Blues.

Deegan signed a three-month deal on Friday afternoon, and travelled with the squad to Carlisle United this weekend. He could make his debut in Saturday’s game at Plymouth Argyle.

The midfielder is now hopeful of producing strong enough displays to earn a longer deal with a club he says he was delighted to link up with.

He said: “Southend United is a very good club and I’m very happy to have signed, initially for three months.

“My aim is to try and impress the manager, my teammates and the fans during my time here and earn a longer contract.

“I came down on a trial basis and I’m pleased with how things have gone. The manager has taken to my style of play and I’m delighted.

“It’s a very good club, pushing at the right end of the division. I will work hard in training to try and push for a start and then hold down my place.”

Deegan felt Blues were unlucky not to win the game at Carlisle last weekend, but felt a point at Brunton Park was a decent result.

He’s also hopefully of being in the squad on Saturday, and believes there are plenty of attributes he can bring to the side.

“At Carlisle I thought the boys were unlucky not to win the game but at the start of the season, you would have said a point at their place is a good result,” he added.

“I’m working my way back to fitness in training. Hopefully I will get a few games behind closed doors under my belt to really kick on.

“It would be great to be in the squad for Saturday’s game. I’d like to think I will bring lots of energy, a good tempo and aggression to the team, while trying to get us playing good football.”
