Having played against Southend United with Torquay United last season during a loan spell, new signing Shaquile Coulthirst says he knows what sort of side he is joining.
Coulthirst joined on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, and is looking forward to the opportunity of a prolonged loan spell with a Football League club.
The striker caught manager Phil Brown’s eye during that game at Roots Hall towards the end of the season, and he admits Blues caught his at the same time.
“I remember coming here with Torquay United last season,” he said. “I was actually very impressed with the way the team played.
“Obviously at the time I didn’t know what was going to be happening for this season, but when I heard of the interest I was keen to join.
“The manager spoke to me on Friday about the way he wants the team to play and that definitely helped me make my decision.
“I know Southend are one of the biggest clubs in this division, so hopefully I can come here and play a part in winning promotion.
“I’m pleased that I’m here for a season because I can settle down and look to try and play some really good football out on the pitch.”
The young striker was back with Spurs during pre-season, and featured in a couple of friendlies out in France before making the decision to join Blues on loan.
“I’ve got my fitness up at Tottenham so far this pre-season but when the opportunity came to get some first-team experience I wanted to take it,” he added.
“We’ve been to a tournament in France and got a couple of games under my belt which has got me in good shape for the season.
“Obviously I just want to be playing as many games as possible and hopefully score some goals which I did for Torquay towards the end of the last campaign.”
