Brown: Cup run can breed winning mentality among the squad

12 August 2014

Phil Brown is hoping Southend United can enjoy a positive run in the Capital One Cup to continue building a winning mentality throughout the squad.

Blues’ boss goes into tonight’s first round tie with League 1 side Walsall hoping to see his side progress and make it two wins from two to start the season.

Having picked up a clean sheet and all three points against Accrington Stanley on Saturday, Brown believes a cup run can do wonders for confidence.

He said: “I’ve said in my programme notes for tonight’s game that the most important thing with a cup run, for me as a manager, is that it can really breed a winning mentality.

“That’s the mentality that we’re trying to instill into this group of players and we made a good start with all three points against Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

“Last year we put in a good performance against Yeovil Town. I can’t remember them having too many shots, but they came away with a 1-0 win. Hopefully we can have a similar performance and add a positive result.”

Brown looks set to make a number of changes for the game against Dean Smith’s side, but not because he’ll be taking the competition lightly.

He added: “We’re not making changes for the sake of it. We’re making them because there are players here who were unlucky to miss out at Accrington and deserve a chance to impress.

“The likes of Mads Ibenfeldt, Adam Thompson, Jack Payne and Will Atkinson will all get some minutes against Walsall. Will more than anyone was unlucky to miss out on Saturday, through no fault of his own.

“He was an important player for us last year, and will be again this year. Jack (Payne) was probably quite frustrated he didn’t kick on from his start in this competition last year, but he’ll have another chance to show what he can do.

“We know Walsall like to get the ball down and play, so it should make for a good game of football. Hopefully we can be the team that edges it and look forward to progressing in the competition.”
