Southend United are pleased to announce the signing of Danish central defender Mads Ibenfeldt on a one-year deal following a successful trial at Roots Hall. The 29-year-old featured first during Blues’ pre-season friendly with Concord Rangers and impressed manager Phil Brown.
Following excellent performances against Ipswich Town and QPR last week, Brown offered the defender a year’s deal at Roots Hall, with an option of a second.
Last season Mads played in Denmark for Akandemisk following a three-year spell with Bronshoj.
He also played for Silkeborg and NFC in his native country, but has made the decision to come to England with Blues.
Blues’ manager was pleased to bring Mads in, adding how impressed he has been with the tall defender since he came on trial.
He said: “Mads has been excellent since he came in on trial. Peter Taylor at Gillingham recommended him to us, and I can see exactly why.
“He’s the sort of player we need. He’s big and physical at the back and is an excellent defender who will add to the competition for places we’ve got here.
“His performances against QPR and Ipswich Town were very impressive. He has plenty of experience. I’m delighted to have him here with us next season."
