Southend United vs. Accrington Stanley

21 April 2014

Report: Southend United 1-0 Accrington

Southend United moved a step closer to the League Two play-offs after a hard fought 1-0 victory against a stubborn Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall this afternoon.

Barry Corr got the only goal of the game in the 64th minute with the Irishman's low drive beating Marcus Bettinelli and finding the corner of the net.

The opening stages of the game was very cagey with neither team creating any chances until the 23rd minute after Jacob Murphy showed a good sign of pace on the wing before his low cross was deflected into the path of Stanley keeper Bettinelli who parried the ball to safety.

It was Southend who continued to press and Corr was next to be denied this time on the line by striker James Gray after Corr's low header from Ben Coker's corner looked destined for the net.

On the stroke of half time Blues thought they went in front after John White's deep right wing cross was headed agonisingly wide by Ryan Leonard who ran into the box unmarked.

The away side continued to frustrate Southend with their defensive stability and nearly took the lead against the run of player after Michael Liddle's back post cross was headed towards the opposite corner by Kal Naismith who saw his effort go harmlessly past the face of the goal.

With just over an hour gone Southend finally found the back of the net through Corr's 11th goal of the season after the striker confidently slotted the ball the ball into the corner of the net from 12 yards out.

Blues won a drop ball near the touch line and Will Atkinson played the ball into Corr who struck the ball first time hard and low towards the corner of the goal with Bettinelli only able to help the ball into the back of the net.

The striker should've got his second of the game in the 83rd minute after Jamar Loza showed great strength to get into the box before setting up the Irishman with his scuffed shot going wide of the target.

Stanley gave Blues a scare in the 84th minute with substitute Shay McCartan denied by a great save by Daniel Bentley at his near post with the striker unmarked at the back post.

Southend secured all three points, leaving them sitting comfortably in the play-off places with two games remaining until the end of the season.
