Penney: A professional performance

Dave Penney on the 3-0 win against Rochdale

Dave Penney praised a professional performance from Southend United as they picked up a terrific 3-0 win against Rochdale at Spotland.

Barry Corr, Jacob Murphy and Michael Timlin got the goals to boost Blues’ play-off chances against automatic promotion hopefuls Dale.

Penney was pleased with the performance, and says the third goal was absolutely crucial in deciding the outcome of the game.

He said: “It was a very professional performance throughout the game. We set our stall out by changing the formation slightly.

“I think both sides showed a respect for each other in the way we set up from the start, but we got a foothold in the game early on.

“It was great to be leading 2-0 at half-time, but the third goal so quickly after the restart completely kills the game and the atmosphere.

“We knew how important the next goal would be and it’s something we always do from a kick-off, so it was great to see it have a big impact.”

Blues played with a real confidence throughout the game and Penney says that’s down to the fact their record against the top teams has been so good this season.

He said: “We showed the players the record we have against the top teams in a meeting at the hotel and we were quietly confident coming here.

“We’ve got a very good record and we made sure the players were aware of that coming into the game.

“The lads worked extremely hard and the legs in midfield meant Rochdale had very little time on the ball. The second goal was great because Will and Ryan both got forward.

“Jacob showed great composure to tee Barry up for the first and deserved a goal for his performance.”
