Friendly: Blues hit five against Gills

15 April 2014

Blues' development squad beat Gillingham 5-0 at Boots & Laces

Jack Payne scored again as Southend United’s development squad beat Gillingham 5-0 at Boots & Laces on Tuesday afternoon.

Payne opened the scoring from the penalty spot for a strong Blues side, before Freddy Eastwood doubled their lead.

Changes were made on the 60 minute and 75 minute mark as Graham Coughlan introduced youngsters, and they kept the goals flowing.

Ellis Brown, on trial with the under-18's, made it 3-0, before Jack Bridge added a fourth and Marlon Agyakwa curled in the fifth goal of the game.

Coughlan said: “It was another good performance. Everyone showed a good attitude and worked hard to get the maximum out of this exercise.

“The young lads came on and picked up where the more senior players left off. If you’ve got a good set of seniors at your club, you’ll have a good set of young lads too.

“The goals we scored were good ones, and it was good to see the young lads all play well once they came onto the pitch.

“The likes of Freddy, Barry Corr, Adam Thompson, Luke Prosser have all got some important minutes under their belts.”

Luke Chambers, Bedsente Gomis, Luke Prosser, Adam Thompson, Ryan Auger, Marc Laird, Conor Clifford, Jack Payne, Anthony Straker, Barry Corr and Freddy Eastwood all got minutes in the game.
