Phil Brown looks ahead to Southend United's game against Rochdale on Good Friday
Phil Brown is hoping Southend United have caught Rochdale at the right time ahead of his side’s trip to Spotland on Good Friday.
Brown felt Rochdale caught his side at a good time in the reverse fixture back in December following a 1-0 defeat to Torquay United the weekend before.
Rochdale, who have the best home record in the division, have faltered slightly in recent weeks, not scoring in their previous three fixtures.
Brown said: “I think earlier in the season, Rochdale caught us at a good time because we’d just had our first defeat for about nine games, losing 1-0 at Torquay United.
“Maybe we’re catching them at the right time too because they’ve not won for three games and haven’t got a goal in that time either.
“I’m not saying it’s a great time, because they are a very good side, but hopefully we can use it to our advantage on Friday and frustrate them before building on a solid defensive base.
“There’s a good pressure on both teams because we’re fighting at the right end of the table. I wouldn’t really even describe it as pressure – that’s when you’re down the bottom fighting relegation.
“But both teams will be desperate for the three points for different reasons, and hopefully we can bring our best game to the table both going forward and defensively.”
Brown is expecting a good game of football at Spotland, having witnessed a decent game between the two sides at Roots Hall earlier this season.
He added: “It’ll be a good game of football full stop. Both sides like to play good football, we saw that against them before Christmas and we can use that as a reference point.
“Both teams played well that day and neither really deserved to win the game because it was even, but hopefully we can have the edge on Friday when we visit them.”
