Will Atkinson on facing his former club and searching for a third League 2 promotion
He played a part in helping Rochdale achieve promotion from League 2, and now Will Atkinson is out to down his former club and boost his current club’s chances of winning promotion to League 1.
Atkinson made 15 league appearances, scoring three goals, during his first loan spell with Dale during the 2009-10 season in which they won promotion to League 1.
Having done it again with Bradford City last season, via the play-offs, Atkinson says he’ll handle the pressure this time around as he hopes to achieve it again with Blues.
He said: “I had a good spell there and was lucky enough to be a part of promotion with them. It was a big one for them because they’d spent a number of years in this division.
“I worked with Keith Hill who did a great job during his first spell before leaving for Barnsley. Since he has returned he’s carried on from where he left-off really.
“They’re a very good side and they are in a good position in the league. They’ll be hoping to pick up another win or two to seal automatic promotion.
“But we will go to Spotland hoping to take all three points. I’m confident we can do it because we’ve done well against the bigger teams so far this season.
“There is pressure on both sides and everyone deals with it differently. For me it is an exciting pressure and I’ve been in this position before which will hopefully help.”
Atkinson says it’s a big weekend for Blues, as they face two games in the space of four days. He added: “Four games are left now and it has been a long season, but we’re still fighting at the right end of the table.
“We need to pick up a few more wins to make sure we get into the play-off places and then hopefully we can kick on from there and achieve promotion.
“It is a big weekend. By next Tuesday a lot more could well be decided so we’ve got to give it everything and then see where we are after these two games.”
