Daniel Bentley on his nomination for Sky Bet's League 2 Player of the Month
Daniel Bentley says his nomination for the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Month is recognition for the whole team following a positive start to the season.
Bentley kept three clean sheets to kick-off the campaign, and saved a penalty against Northampton Town at Roots Hall.
Despite two defeats, Blues are still yet to concede from open play in the league, and Bentley says that’s down to the hard work of everyone, not just himself in goal.
The 20-year-old does however say Blues’ defending of set pieces must, and will, improve.
He said: “It’s an honour to have been nominated, I was really surprised when I found out. It was a fan on Twitter who actually made me aware of it.
“This nomination is for the whole team though. We made a great start to the season winning all three games and keeping clean sheets in all of them.
“We’ve been very disappointed with the last two defeats but in both games we feel we could have got something from them.
“Unfortunately our defending from set pieces has let us down. I’ve spoken with the manager and he’s given me a few pointers, which I will work hard on and hopefully that will help me.
“I think it’s mainly a case of making sure we’re first to the ball. Whether that’s me punching it clear or a defender sticking their head in.
“We’ve been working hard to improve it and I’m sure it will over time.
“One positive is that we’ve not conceded a goal from open play in the league yet. We’re pressing high up the pitch and really defending from the front.
“It would be nice to win the award but I’m just pleased for the team to get the recognition. Hopefully we can build on the first three wins against Morecambe on Saturday.”
