Midfielder believes he's playing his best football in a Southend United shirt
Ryan Leonard believes he is playing his best football in a Southend United shirt, and wants to keep that going this weekend against Morecambe at Roots Hall.
Leonard has played in central midfield for Blues so far this season and is thriving in the role under manager Phil Brown.
He set up Freddy Eastwood for the goal at Wycombe Wanderers last weekend, and the 21-year-old says he’d like to add more goals and assists to his game.
Lenny said: “I’m pleased with how I’ve played so far this season. I think Wycombe was one of my best games but it doesn’t mean anything when we lost the game.
“Since the start of the season I’ve been really enjoying my football and I’ve got lots of confidence. In football that’s a key part of it.
“Hopefully I can just continue what I’m doing, I’m probably playing my best football at Southend and I just want to keep that going.
“I had a really good pre-season so I’m feeling the fittest I’ve been for a long time, with no niggling injuries. I’ll be doing whatever I can to keep my place in the team.
“As a midfielder it’s important to have goals and assists. Hopefully I can get a few more assists for the strikers and get a few goals myself too.”
The midfielder is confident Blues can bounce back with three points against Morecambe, despite having never been on the winning side against them at Southend.
He added: “Since I’ve been at Southend we’ve never beaten them, we’ve never even played very well against them which is disappointing.
“Both games last year finished 1-0, I think it’ll be a tight game again but we’ll have to get on the front foot and win the game.
“We want to keep our momentum going at home and make sure the great atmosphere at Roots Hall stays the same.
“If we can make it three wins from three at home we’ll be able to put the two defeats behind us and start looking forward.”
