Community: NCS returns in Autumn

22 September 2013

Southend United Community and Educational Trust are running their successful NCS project again this autumn, and you can get involved too!

NCS is an active citizen project for 16-17 year olds (current school years 12 and 13). Its aims are to engage young people into positive activity and to build self confidence, whilst also having fun and meeting new people.

It consists of four phases, including a residential, skill development and a social action project.  The project runs throughout October half term and then 5 consecutive Saturdays.

Phase 1 and 2 run from Sunday 27th October to Friday 1st November. Phase 1 is a 4 day residential at the Kingswood Activity Centre in Ashford, Kent. This will see participants’ complete challenges such as Rock climbing, 3G swing and Zip wiring. These challenges see the participants pushed to their limits, and gives them the opportunity to work with other young people they otherwise might not have met.

Upon completion of Phase 1 participants will return to Roots Hall for Phase 2. This involves participants developing skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence. These 2 days are based solely in Southend and will also see participants involved in workshops covering topics such as drug and alcohol misuse where we have a guest speaker, and completion of their FA emergency first aid certificate.

Phase 3 will run on Saturday mornings (9th & 16th), and will involve participants planning a community action project in their group. In the past groups have completed projects aimed at helping the homeless, young carers and a local youth centre. Planning will be assisted by members of Southend United staff, and will help learners to get the most from Phase 4.

Phase 4 runs over three Saturdays, November (23rd & 30th) and December (7th), where participants will deliver their project. Delivering the project gives participants the opportunity to give something back to their local community, and help people and projects that are only run from the support of volunteers!

The project costs just £35 to be a part of, which covers all costs for accommodation, travel and food for the residential,   plus all other costs during the 2, 3rd and 4th Phases.
