A positive performance is vital

Phil Brown believes a good result will come from a positive display from his side

Southend United boss Phil Brown says a positive performance is key when his side welcome to Scunthorpe United to Roots Hall on Friday night.

After a disappointing display against Morecambe last weekend, Blues’ boss says the most important thing is that his side approach the game on the front foot.

Brown said: “The key is a positive performance. I believe if you put in good performances over the course of the season you’ll get more wins that defeats.

“It is tough saying that after two defeats against Chesterfield and Wycombe where we deserved more, but we didn’t against Morecambe.

“We’ve got to get out that mode of bad performances and put in a good one against Southend United.

“I think Brian Laws will come into the game with the mentality of getting something out of the game.

“We’ve got to be on the front foot and put in a positive display. We’ve got to be aggressive in our attacking approach.

“I want the game to be a spectacle and it wasn’t last weekend. Morecambe slowed the tempo down.

“No-one wants a 90 minute game to only have the ball in for 60 minutes so if they try to slow it down we need to make the referee aware of it.”

Brown doesn’t expect to make wholesale changes to his starting line-up, but says one player is struggling with injury.

He added: “I won’t make loads of changes, but there’s an injury we will have to assess but it’s important we try and keep things similar.

“We have analysed what went wrong, there was some poor play and we conceded three disappointing goals.

“It’s all part of the learning curve for the young players in the squad and I’m sure they will respond against Scunthorpe.”
