Defender will go straight into the squad for today's game against Burton Albion
Southend United are delighted to announce the arrival of defender Rob Kiernan on a three month loan deal from FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic.
The 22-year-old defender will go straight into the squad for the trip to one of his former clubs, Burton Albion this weekend.
Kiernan’s career began with Watford, and after loan spells at Kilmarnock, Yeovil Town, Bradford City and Wycombe Wanderers, he joined the Latics in 2011.
He is yet to make a first-team appearance for Wigan and since joining has enjoyed further loan spells with Accrington Stanley, Burton Albion and Brentford last season.
Kiernan played against Blues twice last season; in Burton’s 1-0 win at Roots Hall and in Brentford’s 2-1 loss in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
Blues boss Phil Brown said: “I’m delighted to have Rob signed. We are a bit short defensively at the moment, especially on Saturday with Luke Prosser suspended and Adam Thompson on international duty.
“He has impressed us all in training and comes here with experience of this level having enjoyed a number of loan spells in the last few seasons.”
Kiernan said: “I’m really looking forward to getting some first-team games under my belt.
“I experienced Roots Hall twice last season, winning once and losing once.
“I have seen in training that the manager likes to get the ball down and play football.
“Hopefully I can make an impression while I’m here and help the club climb into the play-off places.”
