Trust hold Show Racism the Red Card event
Last Thursday, Southend United’s Community Trust held a ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ workshop for 90 year six pupils from St Marys and St Helens at Roots Hall.
Three individual workshops were delivered throughout the day focusing on SRtRC’s work, the respect delivered by the Community Trust and a tour of Roots Hall.
There was also the chance for pupils to ask four first-team players questions. Barry Corr, Anthony Straker, Julian Bennett and Marc Laird all went along to answer their questions and sign some autographs.
The questions were all focused around what the pupils learned on the day.
Gavin Sutherland from ‘Show Racism the Red Card said: “It was fantastic to work with Southend Untied and the Trust on this full day event.
“The young people were really engaged by the day and the opportunity to put questions to their role models from the club made the event memorable. I’m sure that those young people will have taken a very positive message back to school.
“We look forward to working with the Trust and the club again.”
Joe Skeels, Social Inclusion Officer for the Trust, said: “It was great to welcome the children from both St Marys and St Helens to learn more about racism in football.
“We were pleased to be able to welcome four first-team players to the event to answer the children’s questions. It was very worthwhile for all involved.”
