Leonard delighted with a goal and a win against Morecambe in the FA Cup
Ryan Leonard says Blues produced a perfect away performance to finally end their Morecambe hoodoo in the first round of the FA Cup.
Leonard wrapped up the game in injury time with his first goal of the season after Anthony Straker had given Blues a 2-0 lead.
The midfielder was delighted with Blues’ performance and to have secured their passage through to the second round.
He said: “It was a really good team effort today. Getting two early goals and putting them under pressure was great. It was almost a perfect away performance.
“We started the game really well and we were all delighted for Strakes to get another two goals, that gave us all confidence to go and play.
“The weather was horrendous but we still tried to play some good football and it worked.
“Morecambe were much better in the second half but we stayed strong, stuck together and got an excellent win. Three goals and into the next round – we can’t ask for much more.”
Leonard was also delighted to get his first goal of the season, having been told by the lads he couldn’t claim the goal against Mansfield Town last Friday.
He said: “I was trying to claim the one against Mansfield but the lads weren’t having any of it so to get my first goal in the next game is great.
“It’s been the case all season that I’ve had a couple of chances and been unlucky and I thought that was going to be the case today.
“It was probably my worst struck shot of the afternoon but to see it go in was great and it rounded off a great day for us and myself.”
Leonard also praised the Blues fans who made the journey to the Globe Arena.
He added: “We’re all pleased that we’re able to send them home happy today because they were the only ones you could here out on the pitch.
“To come all this way especially when we’ve never beaten them before is incredible – it’s great that we’ve finally got a win against them and now we can all look forward to the second round draw.”
