Hurst: Perfect time to end hoodoo

8 November 2013

Kevan Hurst believes Blues can end their winless run against Morecambe on Saturday

Kevan Hurst says Saturday is the perfect time for Southend United to end their winless run against Morecambe in the FA Cup first round.

In seven previous attempts, Blues are yet to beat the Shrimps, but Hurst is confident that run can come to an end against Jim Bentley’s side on Saturday.

That is despite losing 3-1 at Roots Hall earlier in the season in League 2.

Hurst said: “We know that Morecambe are a good side who are doing really well in the league at the moment.

“They’ve been on a good run and are performing well. We saw against us that they are a very efficient side.

“We’ve got to be at our best if we’re too win the game but the winless run has to end at some point and Saturday would be ideal for that.

“I don’t think it plays on the minds of the players too much. We just know we need to produce a good performance, especially for the fans who travel.

“Hopefully I can get another goal or another assist in the game. All three of my goals have come at home so far this season so it would be nice to get one on the road.”

Hurst is also hoping for a good run in the FA Cup, knowing just how positive it can be for the club.

He added: “I’ve had a few good cup runs during my career. Of course we had a good run in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last season.

“I also did well in the FA Cup and League Cup with Chesterfield and got to about the fifth round.

“It’s always good for the club and the fans and players really enjoy a good run in the cup.

“Hopefully Morecambe will be the start of a good run. We don’t want a replay, we want to win at Morecambe, but if it means we come back to Roots Hall and progress, we’ll be more than happy.”
