Ricky Duncan says his squad are excited about playing under the lights at Roots Hall
Ricky Duncan says his players are excited about the prospect of Tuesday’s FA Youth Cup against Maidstone United at Roots Hall.
The under-18’s face Maidstone in the first-round, kick-off 7:30pm, with adults priced at £3 and concessions at £1 and Duncan is confident his players will handle the occasion.
Friday’s win against Crawley Town saw Duncan’s side finish the game with just two second-years on the field, but have now lost just one of their last eight games.
He said: “It’s an occasion that all the boys are really looking forward to. They can’t wait to play under the lights at Roots Hall.
“I think it was on their mind slightly during the game against Crawley Town on Friday but we came through that and now it’s all about preparing for Maidstone.
“We have got a young group here but they all know that they only get two chances at the FA Youth Cup in their career and they want to make the most of it.
“We’ve set a target of the third round. We went out to Portsmouth last season so we want to do better this time around and I’m sure we can.
“Hopefully there’s a good crowd at Roots Hall on Tuesday and they really get behind the lads. They are really excited about the prospect of playing under the lights at Roots Hall.”
Duncan watched Maidstone beat Sutton United in the previous round and is expecting a tough test.
He added: “They did quite well against Sutton and they’ve got some good players in their squad.
“They try to play football so it should be a good game to watch and hopefully we’ll come out on top.
“Their manager watched us on Friday against Crawley but I don’t think he’ll have learned much from that performance.
“We weren’t at the races but I’m sure we will be on Tuesday night. We are currently enjoying a good run of form and confidence is high – we want to keep it that way.”
