Corr: A weight off my shoulders

27 November 2013

Striker delighted to get the winning goal at Fratton Park

Barry Corr says his winning goal at Portsmouth on Tuesday night has ‘lifted a weight off his shoulders’ and he’ll head into Saturday’s game against Cheltenham Town at Roots Hall full of confidence.

The striker hadn’t found the net since his brace against Fleetwood Town, but he headed home John White’s cross with eight minutes left at Fratton Park to hand Blues the three points.

Despite being pleased with his performances in recent weeks, Corr knew he needed to get back on the goal trail, and he was delighted to do so.

Corr said: “It was great to get the winning goal here tonight because it was starting to play on my mind again about scoring goals.

“As a striker your goalscoring record is always going to be looked at and even though I know I do an important job for the team in other ways, it’s always nice to get goals.

“It does feel like a weight lifted off my shoulders and I’ll go into Saturday’s game against Cheltenham Town full of confidence that I can improve on the four I’ve got so far.

“It’s a different role for me so far this season playing up top on my own and it’s hard work, but I am really enjoying it and I think I’ll get better as I get more of an understanding of the role.

“It was a terrific win at Pompey. We showed fantastic character and team spirit to come from a goal down and a man down to win, but we full deserved it.”

Corr believes the attitude and commitment of Blues’ whole squad, not just the starting 11, is to be admired. The striker says that when he lines up along side his team mates before the game, he feels confident that they will give absolutely everything – just like he will.

“When I’m stood in the tunnel before a game, I am full of belief in the players around me, not just on the pitch, but the bench and the ones not even in the squad,” he said.

“That belief is that they will work extremely hard, give everything they’ve got for the team and do whatever they can to help the team get the three points.

“I think the team spirit is a big reason behind our good run of form at the moment.

“We want to keep it going and at the moment confidence is sky high. It’s important we keep it that way for as long as possible.”

It’s not just the players who are giving their all, Corr was massively impressed with the support at Fratton Park.

He added: “I thought the supporters were unbelievable once again. It was a tough journey down for them but they all saw the most important part and that was the two goals.

“That’s a three points for them as much as it is for us because they were brilliant, just as they have been all season.”
