Brown: Phillips faces fight for spot

12 November 2013

Phil Brown says Mark Phillips will face a fight to win back his place in central defence after serving his three-match ban

Phil Brown says Mark Phillips will add competition in central defence having served his three-match suspension.

The experienced defender has missed three games following his red card against Dagenham & Redbridge, but will be available for Saturday’s trip to York City.

He will also play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Charlton Athletic today to boost his match fitness.

His return is good news for Blues’ manager, who will be missing Adam Thompson on Saturday.

Brown said: “Mark has served his suspension and will be involved against Charlton to boost his fitness levels ahead of Exeter City.

“It’s great to have him back available and will mean I’ve got to pick two from three central defenders again this weekend.

“We’ve had a number of injuries and suspensions in that position that has meant we’ve had to rotate quite a bit, but it’s always nice to have to make decisions.

“Mark is an experienced head and has done well so far this season, so he’ll be in contention for Saturday’s team selection.

“Unfortunately Adam Thompson won’t be as he is off on international duty with Northern Ireland.

“They’ve seen he was on the bench on Saturday and have called him up for their two games. Otherwise he’d have been involved against Charlton.

“The positive is that he’ll get two games under his belt and then be back with us available for York City at home.”
