Dave Penney & Bob Shaw arrive while Graham Coughlan takes up the role of First Team Coach
Southend United can today confirm the backroom team for the 2013/14 season has been finalised.
News of the arrivals of Bob Shaw and Dave Penney had been released in the local press earlier last week, but the Club opted to wait until the backroom team had been finalised to make the announcement.
That has today been completed with Graham Coughlan agreeing a deal to take up the role of First Team Coach.
Dave Penney will take over as Assistant Manager while Bob Shaw has also joined the Club in the role of Head of Recruitment and Scouting.
Coughlan, who was on a playing contract last year, has agreed a new deal that will see him work alongside Penney and Brown.
Brown said: “I’m delighted to have kept Graham here. His passion and knowledge was first class last season and he was a huge help to me after I was appointed manager.
“He works extremely hard and is very good at getting the best out of players, he will have an important role to play throughout the season.”
Penney, 48, who has been out of work since leaving Bristol Rovers in 2011, began his management career while still a player at Doncaster Rovers.
He was handed the job on a full time basis and was with the club until 2006, winning the Conference Play-off Final in 2002-03 and then sealing promotion from League 2 as champions in 2003-04.
He left in August 2006 having, in his eyes, taken Doncaster as far as he could, before being appointed Darlington manager in October 2006.
In 2009, after three years, he moved to Oldham Athletic, but endured a tough time, leaving the job at the end of the 2009-10 season before spending just three months at the Memorial Stadium with Bristol Rovers.
On the arrival of Penney, Brown said: “I’m thrilled that Dave has joined the Club and I’m sure the whole team will benefit from having him around.
“He has an excellent understanding of this level having won promotion with Doncaster back in 2003-04.
“I’ve known Dave for a long time and he’s a great man to have around the Club, I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Shaw, who worked with Phil at Derby, Bolton and Hull City, will become the Club’s Head of Recruitment and Scouting.
On Shaw’s appointment, Brown said: “He has 15 years experience in the game and will be able to earmark certain targets who can benefit the Club.
“Bob will have to hit the ground running as we prepare for the new season, it will all move very quickly now in terms of identifying players who he feels can come in and do a good job for us.”
Ben Clarkson (Head Physio), Mark Williams (Head of Sports Science), Rob Kane (Performance Analyst) and Terry Mason (Goalkeeping Coach) all still remain at the Club as part of the backroom team.
